Hello to all. I've recently been granted registration rights to this fine site (after browsing ananymously for some weeks) and am very much looking forward to returning the favor of your welcome with some meaningful contributions of my own to this forum. But, first -- perhaps in a mildly boorish display of poor taste -- I thought I might trouble you all for some casual advice. I will be in London for a few days this week and have an appointment on the row during that period. I was wondering whether anyone might be in a position to commend to me an establishment in the vicinity at which one might enjoy a nice pint or cocktail. Not being a UK resident, I do try to make some use of its proper pubs when visiting (as we can claim nothing quite so charming among the social drinking establishments of the Americas) but, for present purposes, I suppose I am not limited in interest to pubs alone. Any suggestions for a nice venue within strolling distance that would be suitable for libations and conversation would be much appreciated.

The favor of any reply will indeed be greatly appreciated.

If you search the website, you'll find more than a few threads (most may be under this subforum, "Elegant Living") treating of London. Remember, though, that London is a very large city; not much will be within easy walking distance!

I did try to play around with the search feature but wasn't able to find anything specific to the area surrounding the Row. Although I've a few preferred old London haunts of my own, I'm always curous to explore new corners of culverwood's fair city.

Mulligan's, around the corner in Cork Street, is a grand place to drink a pint of Guiness and snack on a dozen oysters.

Visited that restaurant during my last trip to London. I liked it so much for lunch that I returned for dinner!

Meeting Richard Corrigan during the lunch hour and helping him pick just the right condiments for the new four-year aged ham was a blast.

In addition to the food, their fresh-baked breads were amazing.

I seem to remember a very decent rabbit, however, in a different part of the year. Not enough to topple their reputation for seafood, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless.

I think you should check out TIger Tiger, which is about a 15 minute walk from the Row.

I used to like the Sub Rosa Bar at the Cavendish Hotel until a new owner spoiled it but it is still a nice quiet snug place.

thanks again to all for the suggeestions. as it turns out, I was summoned to a lunch with family over in the east shortly after my appointment on the row last week and, as a result, my plan for a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood was foiled. it looks as if I've now got great fodder for such an expedition next time 'round, though.

as an aside, the venue for the aforementioned lunch was vinoteca on st. john street, an establishment I can heartily recommend. the atmosphere is quite casual and the scene slightly "hip," but the food was delightful and the wine pairings superb. it's often quite busy, though -- and reservations are not taken -- so a rather acute downside is frequent long waits during prime times.

Tiger Tiger is for young trendies. When I worked across the road, the house champagne at £12.50 during happy hour was very good.

I recommend The Audley pub on the corner of South Audley Street and Mount Street. The Red Lion in Duke of York Street, just off Jermyn Street, is one of my favourites.
