A Gaggle of Greens

Unusually - at least for me - I had the pleasure of three pairs of Edward Greens arriving in the one week. Two are MTO pairs which I had ordered seemingly ages ago.

1. Shannon
Plain toe with fleur de lys medallion. Pearl suede uppers. 82 last in C width.



Despite Alden's usual advice to drop down in size and go up in width on the Edward Green elongated lasts such as 82 and 888, I went the other way - going up a couple of sizes and dropping right down to C width. I think dress boots look best on very sleek, elongated lasts:





2. Opera
Patent leather. 389 last in C width.



Again, I chose to play around with widths to get a sleeker shoe and am relieved to report that they fit perfectly.

3. Grant
Edward Green for Ralph Lauren Purple Label. It is my first pair of shoes on the 888 last.



So there you go - something to wear with the morning coat, the dress coat and the lounge coat.

Excuse me for correcting you here. If I have advocated anything with respect to EG it is to go up a size and down a width. I have even followed my own advice in this regards over the past twenty years

You may be referring to the advice I gave members wishing to find their Carmina shoes size using their EG size as a basis for comparison.

Sorry Alden just to clarify a misunderstanding: I tend to regard a D width as my usual width in EGs. So to wear a "medium" E width I would have to drop down a size. That is what I meant. I think you did write once that you can wear wider widths in the elongated 82 and 888 lasts but that you are better off up-sizing and dropping down in width in lasts like 88 and 202.

The Windsor shoe in the photo is an 888 in a 11.5D (UK). When it comes to EGs shoes, I could wear a 11E, 11.5D or 12C depending on the last shape. The 202, 32, 606 and 88 are short lasts, so I prefer to go longer and narrower. The 808, 888 and 82 are longer lasts, so I can go shorter

This has for a long time been one of my favourite threads in all of LL history. I have read and re-read it countless times. The shoes in this thread are really the fruits of what I have learnt here.

Alden, just to make sure I get it, Sir, do you mean going up one size and down one width relative to a British shoe, or relative to an American shoe?
