Anyone still use a tie bar/pin or collar bar/pin?

After looking around the LL for a while I have noticed not much has been said about tie jewelry.
So I will see if we can get things started. I used to wear tie bars all the time, but not so much anymore, (still and always wear cuff links though ).
As much as I enjoy the look of tie pins (and I do have a few sitting in my jewelry box) I don't want to wear them or they will hurt my ties.
I really enjoy collar bars/pins, because that look is very elegant just look at an old photo of Cary Grant or Fred Astaire. Even though my closet is full of spread and cutaway collars I do have one shirt that is a point collar and I am starting to use collar bars again, now I need to get some collars with eyelets for my collar pins.
My favorite tie bar is a sterling silver bar in the shape of a golf club I got at Tiffany & Co. in NYC back in Summer of 2002.

I've worn a collar pin on and off for a couple of years now. I don't use the variety that requires an eyelet shirt, though they intrigue me (they'd lend themselves best, I think, to detachable collars, otherwise they would limit the shirt's flexibility).

As for tie bars, I'm keen but yet to find one that suits me. There's a quite solid looking sterling silver piece in a nearby store that I do intend to take a closer look at. And, I'm just itching to have one made in rose gold...

The J Press website sells collar pins for a very inexpensive price, does anyone know if these are worth buying?

Almost every Day.. unless I'm wearing a Cravat.. come to think of it, i use a pin with that too..

I have had a couple of shirts made with eyelet collars, to honour a beautiful tie pin with 2 small pearl ends that I reiceved as a gift. I wear them rarely, though, as I find the pin tends to draw too much attention.

Collar bars are not very usual in the UK but nothing wrong with them as far as I know. Otherwise there are pins and clips. Despite Noel Coward and Dennis Thatcher (!) clips are not comme il faut however, stock pins (large gold safety pins) and stick pins are quite usual but they do tend to damage ties. Foulard silk is more vulnerable than woven. A pearl pin is the thing for formal occasions. Nelson's pin in pearl and ruby is on display in the National Maritime Museum and is quite superb.

What are your thoughts on them?

See the cover of Alan Flusser's "Dressing the Man" for a great photo of Cary Grant donning a collar pin shirt. Collar pins are quite classically stylish. I had a white pique/royal oxford point collar shirt made with eyelets, which I wear with a "safety pin" type collar bar. I also had a black and white glen plaid suit with blue overcheck made that I wear with a navy blue silk knit tie with a V shaped bottom. In fact, I am wearing the above today. The look replicates the cover of Flusser's book. Now if I only looked like Cary Grant!

I have a couple of pal zileri shirts with round old fashion collar and bronze collar bars .
Two of my favourites, I wear them a lot and I think they look amazing with certain ties.
I will be ordering also a couple of new ones soon from the people who make my shirts in Greece www.bespoke.gr , so I would surely think that buying some bars from jpress would be worth it ...although I don't think that they ship to Europe ! Do they?

I'd expect that Press would ship anywhere, Vassilis. Give them a try: a good company, if at times a bit more expensive than need be.

I like the single-page (because "under construction") website you posted for your Greek shirtmakers, despite the rather lost-looking young fop on the right. The grandfatherly man seated at center certainly is well-dressed -- an excellent advertisement for what must be a fine firm.

Yes, that was my impression on the chap on the right as well.. It is a good firm run by a guy who takes a lot of pride in his own appearance. He uses a few artisans in Greece and Italy and also from what he said in Istanbul were he told me that they do the most amazing needle work and I believe him on that. They have a very old tradition over there.
The owners name is also Vassilis actually.
