I think he was pulling your leg.

But I no longer wear my "old boys'" ties, so perhaps I'm out of the loop.

Are there any other such signalers that I should know to avoid?
Yes, according to a poster on Styleforum, wearing cashmere socks may be a sign that the wearer haz teh gay. So if you are wearing red cashmere socks, you may be Quentin Crisp.

Thank God I'm too broke to wear cashmere socks.

And here comes the great PC disclaimer: "Not that there is anything wrong with those who..... wear red cashmere socks".

Actually, I'm a bit bummed out these days as I've put holes in a few socks recently from new shoes I bought. That'll teach me to not to stop wearing my good Teflon reinforced socks.

Nobody darns cashmere socks anymore do they?

Braces, handkerchiefs, shoe linings and, maybe socks, are wonderful in red - brightens up (so far as I recall from my 86'F abode) the English winter.

Having just survived a harrowing late-night drive along narrow, winding roads in the high, steep hills -- small mountains, really -- of New England while snow fell thick and fast: Don't rub it in, Nicholas, I beg you!
