Top / Winter Coat Buttons

Are all the buttons on a top coat meant to be fastened? Or does the same rule apply as per suit coat?

This depends upon coat and weather. Here in the northeastern States, I generally don't button the top ("boutinniere") button but, instead, wear a thick scarf to cover my chest as well as my throat. But, if the weather's harsh enough, I certainly button everything I can!

Thanks for the reply. I'm just so used to having the bottom button undone on my suit, that it looks a bit odd to me having all the buttons fastened on my winter coat!
