Being a student I can't afford tailoring for myself but I've just had a stroke of luck in Hornets in Kensington.

I've found - all vintage bespoke - a tailcoat in black (1937), very dark (only very thin stripes of light grey between two dark grey coloured stripes) striped high-backed trousers, and a d-b waistcoat in a blue (just darker than sky blue).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a shirt/tie colour to go with a blue waistcoat, as opposed to the more usual buff or grey? I'm going to a wedding later this week.

and secondly, I'm thinking about having the coat altered, but can anyone advise how fitted is a morning coat is supposed to be?

You may already have a white shirt which will be adequate which will save a little of your student loan. A french blue(?) waistcoat is unusual and I do not think you need to gild the lilly on this occasion with a shirt with any colour.

Coats for morning dress are not too fitted usually and if your wedding is later this week could you get it done in time?

Thanks for the reply; I've a white shirt, but since the soft collar does look rather small especially with a db waistcoat I was thinking about investing in a seperate collar+shirt anyway.

Black for the coat, grey striped for the trousers.

You may wear a grey suit for:

A) going to races (but not the Royal Enclosure please)

B) a wedding in the afternoon if you want to appear informal.

The waistcoat sounds marvellous. Is there any chance of seeing a picture? I hope you were able to solve your sartorial conundrum in enought time!

I'd love to, the only problem in the event was not having a pale enough tie. I don't have any means of putting a picture online. If you liked I could e-mail it and you could post it up, if you were able.
