A question to members:

Does anyone know of a source in the UK for arm-patches for sweaters? My favourite winter sweater, much worn in the Bodleian, developed a hole yesterday, and though a kind lady darned it for me, the elbows, after several years of hard wear, are pitifully worn. As the rest of the sweater is going strong, patches would be very desirable; preferably such as to match or complement dark blue.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Manself

When my favourite, and now rather old, cashmere sweater developed extremely thin elbows I took it to my local dry cleaner - Blossom and Browne's Sycamore - and they applied fabric patches to the elbows. That was probably two years ago and they're holding up very well. If you can get to the Sycamore I recommend it.

In the haberdashery department of John Lewis/Peter Jones you can find leather or imitation leather patches with the holes already pre-punched.

They're easily stiched on by hand, guiding the needle through the holes.
