It seems as if the "ballerina" type lacing for footwear was quite popular back in the 30's as noted here on the Prince's ghillies. Why have they now been regulated to women's footwear in the male psyche (like mine... I wouldn't wear it!) and among manufacturers?

What is the material difference between knickers and plus fours? Or is the former slang for the latter? I used to think "plus four" referred to an additional 4 inches of fabric below the knee.

A few gentlemen at my club mentioned golfknicker.com though a quick google for knicker golf plus four turns up quite a few sites, several offering complete ensembles.

plus four and plus two refer to the amount of drape below where the trousers cuff the leg. I always thought that, apart from their slang application to womens’ underwear, knickers were a generic reference to short pants.

My (in fact, not even my) two pences on the topic. Here is a relevant excerpt on correct dress for golfing occasion from the "Modern Tailor, Outfitter And Clothier" book:

Golf. -- Loungle-style jacket or sports coat, etc. Trousers, or plus fours and hose. Parti-coloured shoes or brogues. Cap. Pullover, sweater, cardigan, etc.
