Has anyone been to the new JPress shop in New York?

Was woundering how it compares to the old 44th street shop.

In the Fall 07 catalog they have a DB blazer.

The last time I was at the old 44th street shop in January 06 they had a side vented SB jacket.

What's next, pleats on the trousers.

The biggest plus of the new store is that the legendary Jay Walter has joined its staff. Jay was last at Venanzi's. (Many of you met him at Manton's book party.) Before Venazi Jay had been with Brooks Bros. for decades. He was the de facto head salesman of MTM for Brooks. He was in daily contact with Messrs. Martin Greenfield and Stanley Cohen of Isles Textiles.

With Jay's arrival J. Press has reintroduced MTM through Martin Greenfield. At one time J. Press had a full custom program, but that was eliminated years ago. J. Press became a RTW shop. From my brief discussions with Jay it seems that J. Press' MTM program is a bit more competively priced than Brooks Bros., and the base price of a suit with either Smith's or Harrison's is about $1,900. Jay has the English classic cloths distributed by his good friend, Stanley Cohen. (Brooks doesn't.) I believe that workmanship on the J. Press MTM suit is either comparable to Brooks or exceeds Brooks's level.

J. Press is using its own patterns, and you can get a suit with the J. Press signatures such as the hook vent and the quarter inch stitching. It also has a new two button model with pleated pants. I believe that you can order almost any style that you want, from the J. Press 3B sack to a more shaped 2B model.

The new store is a bit smaller than the old store, hence, it has somewhat less merchandise. The plus side is that they have eliminated some of the old stuff that never sold.

The new store has a new, modern, and uncluttered look. White and bright. I like it.

Is Jay the MTM specialist? The reason I am asking is I am wondering whether the regular salesman will still get a cut if you use Jay for MTM?

Jay is a regular salesman, and he can sell anything from MTM suits to a pair of socks.

I don't know how the commission structure works, but it's a small shop, and there would be have to a certain level of cooperation and team spirit. It's also a union shop.
