For a while I've had tucked away a sample from Smith-- a grey nailhead in 12oz, #1620. By "nailhead" I mean repeating tiny squares, with triangular wedges inserted in each. If there's a more appropriate name for that, I'm all ears.
Anyway, Smith no longer carry this, and a call this morning confirmed that they only offer one like it in 9oz. H E Box used to have a very similar one in 12oz that has also been discontinued. This I found out after placing an order. Same mill, perhaps?
So--- any ideas for alternative sources?
In fall/winter weight I could settle for pindot or birdseye, from which there are many to choose. And pick &pick is perfectly adequate for basic all-round wear. But I like the visual interest and softness of this particular pattern.
Nailhead source?
Closer examination reveals tiny mid-grey squares on a charcoal background, or separated by charcoal gridlines. Anyway, all suggestions welcome. And thanks to Dopey for the pics.
Try looking at the Dugdale. I was on the fence myself between the 1660 from Smtih and Dugdale's version. I ended up going with Dugdale, but I think it was 14 oz.
Do you find Dugdale books readily available in NY?
Update on original:
Got some samples mailed from a London source. 2 Dugdale (sort of 11-12oz, I think), and a more somber grey from "Fine Classics" which might be Harrison's. Not quite the light squares with darker frames-- more repeated / / / / / / / / /s. But very acceptable as substitutes.
There were also some from the Premier Cru and Cru Classé but those seemed a little too glossy for this application.
