Interesting pics, Alden. I thought Morning Dress was supposed to be in grey, but maybe some of the gentlemen are officials or working at the function?
Is that the normal height for top hats in one of the pics (see below) nowadays?

Good god NO!
Black morning dress is the more formal of the two types and would be worn by many of the more 'senior' present. Grey is equally acceptable.
There is no correlation between the staff and racegoers(guests at a function) and black or grey suits save the quality of them.

The most common hat is around a 5&1/4 crown, though for Ascot some prefer the 6&1/4. The Height is influenced by many different factors, including shape and style. As well as the height of the individual.
This was me on 2nd day. End of the day after a few drinkies, so tie was s bit skew whiff by then!
