Composed predominantly of sharp suits and that increasingly rare and archaic item—the woolen overcoat once known as a Chesterfield (President Bush has one too!), Obama's wardrobe, and the pinstripes and polos favored by his fellow candidates, are treated by the press like soothingly neutral background music.

I haven't been able to discover much about Mr. Obama's wardrobe maker. The Men's VOGUE article: cover issue, didn't discuss Mr. Obama's sartorial choices. Personally, I applaud the use of a Chesterfield coat. Smart looking, quirky, detailed. Here's the candidate's Illinois Senate photo: Image

President. Mr. Johnson was campaigning with John Kennedy in 1960, and he had to look at Kennedy's bespoke tailored suits and then look at his own clothes.

Anyway one day in December, 1960, after the election Lyndon Johnson of Austin, Texas, turned up on Savile Row in London, England, and walked into the firm of Carr, Son & Woor. He said he wanted six suits, and the instructions he gave were: "I want to look like a British diplomat."
