Wanted - velvet supplier for new coat collar
I want to upgrade a grey overcoat I've inherited , by getting a tailor to replace the upper part of the collar with velvet. Who should I go to to obtain the velvet.? .preverably some trustworthy and possiblty expensive source-as I'll only need < 1/2 metre ..if they can do it by post then so much the better . What colours..black or nayy spring to mind..any help would be very gratefully received.
Charles,
Dormeuill have a great "Formal" bunch which includes some very good velvets .
I would suggest a black rather than blue . If you can find a silk velvet rather than a cotton ,you will have a very special collar indeed!
Have you given any thought to Astrakhan as an alternative or do you consider it too much ?

Holland and Sherry has a decent selection of colors - including blue and black. And they will work by mail. The contact details are on the website. I think dark blue sounds like a nice twist and would look better if the coat isn't too dark of a grey.

Hi, Charles, sorry for not responding to your post much earlier as I was a bit busy preparing for an accountancy refresher course held in Singapore.
Black should be most suitable for your grey overcoat. I have some silk (that's what the Shanghainese saleswoman claimed) velvet (that also) fabric material which I was planning to add to the collar (or, lapel?) of my Chesterfield. Fortunately, I couldn't remember the "correct" fabric to use was Velvet, and so had both the collar and lapel covered with Mink! At first, I was so disappointed with my mistake because Mink costs so much more than velvet. But when I walked around Shanghai, much to my amazement, there were many people who had real fur on the collars of their overcoats; if not for the mink, their overcoats would have outclassed mine.
If it's not too late, you could provide me with your address plus tell me the length you desire.
