Cary Grant was pronounced 'too goodking,' to wear hats. He avoided them, throughout his career. Does this make sense, to any of you? Can a man or woman . . . be 'too good looking,' for hats?

It's me again. I'll offer my own opinion: no, I don't think Cary Grant was too good looking, to wear hats. He had a very large head; hats may not have flattered him, but personally, I don't think any man is 'too good' looking, to wear hats. Errol Flynn wore hats. Gary Cooper, wore hats. Robert Taylor wore hats. Burt Lancaster, wore hats. All, considered to be very handsome men, of their time.Errol Flynn
As for the ladies . . . many women's hats are difficult to wear. But if a woman has the right face for 'her' hat . . . it will suit her, just fine.

... I'm not good looking enough to wear a hat! In a world where hat wearers have become the exception rather than the rule, to wear a hat is to draw attention to oneself. How ironic that with global warming, a thinning ozone layer, and record incidences of skin cancer, hat wearing has fallen by the wayside. I wish the practice would once again become de rigueur. "Why yearn, just do it", I hear you say. Funny thing is, when it comes to my wardrobe in general, I wear what pleases me, not what pleases others. For some reason, I'm just not comfortable wearing a hat. And I think I've just answered my own question - if you wear a hat, wear it with confidence. If I ever conquered my own insecurities, my weapon of choice would be a Philip Treacy design. Just stunning!

I cannot open your links, to the Treacy hats. I know that his designs are very, very popular. I'm not handsome enough for hats, but I wear them anyway. Recently a cousin delivered to me a persian lamb number, from Moscow. It is the warmest hat, that I have ever put on my head. Flaps down, tied underneath the chin . . . it protects, like armor. I wear all sorts of styles. Trilby is probably my favorite.
For women, on the right face, a hat can be devastating.

Well, he may not have emphasized them, but it's not true he avoided them. In several movies--"Holiday" and "His Girl Friday" come immediately to mind--he was handsomely hatted in appropriate circumstances. I also recall seeing him in a topper ("Bringing Up Baby"?). Of course, he did have that widow's peak which, along with the chin cleft, seemed to be prized by his feminine admirers, but he looked perfectly fine in all kinds of hats:

Thank you. Unless I'm mistaken, your post contradicts at least to some degree, what I read in Richard Torregrossa's book: Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style. If I recall correctly, the prevailing concensus among Mr. Grant's attendants and outfitters, was that he was 'too good looking' to wear hats. I'll have to read that section of the book, again.
