I saw some 14oz hopsack at Smith's. Is hopsack suitable as suiting? I am not concerned about its texture and informality, but rather the longevity of this weave for trousers.

Good question. I just took delivery on a pick-and-pick from the same book, but if I were to get dark grey (not mid), I'd be sorely tempted to do the hopsack.

I think it would be very suitable. In the future, I plan to use the 13 oz navy hopsack from Lessers for a DB suit.

Yes, it's suitable. 14 oz. Lesser's navy hopsack was my first Davies suit. It's five years old and going strong.

If you're going to be wearing the suit once a week, then it may pay to have a second set of trousers made which you'll alternate. However, if you have a large wardrobe, a second set would be optional. I did the second set of trousers for a while, but I ceased the practice due to the size of my collection.

I always consult the tailor about issues of longevity since I feel that he's the professional.

Good luck.

this is great to hear - as both kolecho and myself have been debating the issue for a number of weeks, but our biggest concern was that hopsack might be too corse for trousers if when unlined? with this i suggested that we could put false boxer shorts in to soften the impact.

i love the look and feel of hopsack and most importantly is its porousness whicill make it great for HK weather

I have a couple of 15 oz hopsack suits that are unlined in the trousers and they are just perfect to wear.

Hopsack might look coarse, but this type does not feel rough. My trousers are partially lined.

On the other hand, I have found thornproof tweed to be itchy, therefore, I had the pants fully lined.

thank you for your reply Mark - once i seen the samples of what kolecho had got from Smiths it made me feel a bit like "a kid again looking for the toy catalog" so it is great to hear so many good reveiws about it as i am hoping it will be more appealing that other fabrics in the same plain color.

i was thinking of lining to boxer short length in cotton, my i ask what you have had your lined in?

can anyone post some pictures of a hopsack blazer? I'm in the process of choosing cloth for a 2B with patch pockets and want something which looks as casual as possible - so I can wear it with anything from jeans to super 100s.

am currently favouring a Holland & Sherry navy worsted at 13oz, but hadn't considered hopsack until now...

Bemberg, the same lining in the coat.

Check the recent photos of the East Coat Chapter Photojournal regarding the visit by Davies & Son. That is a hopsack blazer.

thanks Mark. unfortunately, having only joined LL today, I don't think I have access to photojournals (if in fact I do, can you point me to where I can find them?).

How does a DB navy hopsack sound like for a project, or should I go for a SB peaked lapel navy hopsack?

i think the DB would be a great project esp at 14oz, you will be able to get great drape and the jkt itself will double great as a sports coat too!

i only concern would be some might think hopsack is quite informal - but for me it would not worry me in the slightist!
