I am currently studying for a MA in the techniques of the tailored jacket. It is a requirement of this course to write a paper for my contextual studies module and I have decided to investigate how we value the tailored jacket. My working title for this is currently ‘is it fair to compare the Savile Row jacket to the ready made.’ It would be interesting to hear anyone’s thoughts on this subject?

The tailored jacket
Compairing the two, The Savile Row jacket is almost a breed apart, in regards to fit. A RTW jacket will never fit as well as one that is designed around the individual's body and posture.
Also, there are the differences of construction. Most RTW jackets lack the tradional approach to garment manufacturing that can be seen in bespoke (one at a time, by hand). There are some exceptions such as Oxxford and the like, but even they lack the tradition of a place like Savile Row.
Basically, one is made for profit and the other for a client.
