I've noticed that the button spacing is a uniform 11 cm. between each of the 3 buttons, regardless of the tailor.

Is there a tailoring ratio which dictates this?

Could a tailor not use for example 12 cm. between buttons?

There are times when I would like a wider spacing but negotiating this is like pullling teeth.

I think it depends on your heighth plus the cut of the coat.

There's no reason that it has to be 11 cm. as long as all the buttons are equidistant.

So, 9 or 10 or 11 or 12 cms. apart would I suppose all be acceptable, I would think.

Refer to a DB; the buttons are all over the place depending on the tailor but wherever the buttons are finally placed, the main point is that the buttons remain equidistant from each other.

To confirm the previous poster's point: at my recent basted fitting the cutter chalked the three button positions by eye while the coat was on me then and stood back. I contemplated the effect in the mirror, and asked, "What would you think about moving the buitton-point up half an inch?" He said, "No problem, sir. Shall we close the bottom one up, open the top one, or move all three?" Since I have a relatively high and short waist I liked closing them up, and he seemed pleased with the result. The quarters will be slightly more open than the SR average, so a slightly closer spacing should harmonize well.
