So you think that you have trouble justifying your bespoke outlay?
Imagine the poor woman who lusts for a Birkin bag starting at $13,000.

Hermes
Women get a little insane when near Hermes.
Birkin bags go for about $5,000-7,000 at resale shops!
My wife had her friend buy a Birkin at a resale shop in the Paris antiques district. She e paid $4,000. It was classic black box leather. She used it once. She doesn't like it. Too heavy. We tried to sell it on eBay, and there were no bites.
I occasionally remind my wife of the Birkin bag escapade whenever she complains about my clothing purchases. At least I get use out of my clothes!

You know, it is just a crazy thing. When you lust for some material item, that you just MUST have, cost is no longer an object, even if you must go without bread.
I don't know what it is in either the human psyche or in the seduction of the item itself, to cause this lust for material objects. But it certainly is a powerful emotion.
I've read blurbs on the Japanese salary girls who spends literally many months of their monthly income to buy a Louis Vujitton or other such item.
What drives this urge?

I spoke to a Frenchcraftsman doing a making demo of the Brikin bag...and he was taking his time, and seemed very skilled. He said he made every single part himself, including the clicking. And it takes some 70 hours to complete a bag. Maybe the asking price ain't that bad after all?

The Birkin and Kelly bags are desecptive in that they are easily copied and have been copied numerous times. You can buy a Birkin "knockoff" for a few hundred dollars in a Park Avenue store, such as Suarez, or for less than $100 on a street corner.
However, the workmanship of the genuine Hermes article cannot be matched by the Asian copy. The Hermes bag is like the Savile Row suit. Made to last.
I think that the value for money or longevity argument to justify such prices or purchases is specious.
Such purchases go beyond the logical into the realm of the emotional.
Emotions are everything if an object is to have real meaning.
Without them, an item simply means nothing except what it offers in terms of utility and practicality.

What item do LL members lust for?
The nearly unobtainable, the wildly impractical, the ridiculously expensive....

One may argue that the bespoke Savile Row or Shattuck suits, bespoke Charvet or Kabbaz shirts, and bespoke shoes many of us lust for and sometimes indulge in are all three...Anonymous wrote:What item do LL members lust for?

RJ
Within the realm of dress and accessories and what is excessively indulgent, I would say,
1. The Richard Lange in platinum
2. The Hermes Kelly bag in a carry on luggage size
3. A beautiful , Italian straight grain pipe, hand carved, perhaps by Castello
4. A Loro Piana cashmere something.
5. Several best quality alligator belts
