The only legitimate reason to play with the notion of open cuff buttons can be to introduce an element of informality. The far more common reason is ostentation. Not only will it be self defeating, but it also make it more difficult for those trying to achieve the formet objective.

Re unstitching, the finer the cloth, the more problematic, as manton rightly pointed out. But also cloths with a large disparidy of colour (black & white herringbone, for example) make any damage far more visible.

Good reweavers are very rare. I know of one single good firm in London. They are fantastic, though. An expensive exercise, by the by.

i think people without any knowledge wouldn´t take notice about it...for the others it´s like a secret sign
I prefer to close the buttons...
