cloth recommendations for morning suit

Gentlemen:
I am in the process of having a gray morning suit made for the races. My tailor has recommended a mid/light gray sharkskin from the Smith Woolens formals book. I like it, but was under the impression that a plain-weave or twill would be more appropriate for morning dress (interestingly, though, the Smiths formals book contains no such cloth). Does anyone have any thoughts as to other alternatives for an appropriate cloth and/or as to whether a sharkskin is the "correct" cloth for such an outfit?
As an aside, I would love to see any photographic samples anyone has of gray morning suits other than the current PoW's suit that is well documented on the interwebs.
Many thanks.
