I've noticed that on many tweed patterns there's a windowpane (overcheck?) in two or more colors. Almost invariably, one of these colors draws the eye to it more than the other(s). It suddenly occurred to me that as I am not a small man, I would be best served by wearing tweeds in which the most conspicuous color would be the one running vertically.

Astute observation, or nitpicking?

If nits there are to pick, it's the myth that vertical lines in a patterned fabric make a large man look smaller or thinner. Chalk it up to wishful thinking. Rather than being concerned about a tweed with a windowpane overcheck versus a multistripe with a dominant color, you might consider a Prince of Wales
fancy tweed sans stripes. Take a look at the fabrics and patterns on the Henry Poole site, just for ideas. There is a fancy tweed similar to the pattern of a sport jacket worn by Cary Grant in Alfred
Hitchcock's Notorious. A colorful guncheck would work equally well. And accessorizing either
is easy. Think tattersal check vests, cashmere pullovers with cablestitching, and comfortable trousers
suitable for the country.
