I posted this in the Clothclub forum, but somehow feel it should be here.

I’m a new member – or guest? – and I want to say how much I appreciate the LL.
I found the LL while doing research for my PhD in aesthetics. Odd?

My research was on the subject of dandyism. And, in what I found online, the LL stood out, absolutely. I have no words. And this is something so new, in so many ways.

Anyway, since the beginning, I felt I belonged here. I’ve had contact with the bespoke apparel arts since I was a kid, but not as frequent as I wish. And I’ve been wanting heavier - better - fabrics for years.

I have some questions: how does the clothclub work? How can we have that beautiful cloth?

And, by the way, I’m Portuguese, and live in Lisbon.

Sorry about my English, which I feel is a bit rusty, or at least stiff. Thank you.

Dear NES

Welcome to the LL! Or should I say instead: seja bem vindo ao clube! It is such a pleasure to meet another lusophone in here. As to the subject matter of your doctoral research, it sounds quite interesting. There is no oddity in your joining the LL while pursuing a PhD degree in aesthetics: I would say that it is all about aesthetics here. The aesthetics of life…

My recent (and first, but certainly not last) visit to Lisbon left me wondering why we had no members from this wonderful city where masculine elegance seems very much at home. Welcome aboard, NES!

after all, dandysm was invented on London.

this is by far the best forum on the web. there are many others but they are somehow dubious.

www.dandysm.net is quite good also, once the clowns are removed.

Thank you very much! Muito obrigado! Yes, it’s all about aesthetics in the LL. And “aesthetics of life” is, in fact, my theme. It is, in part, a genealogy of dandyism, as an aesthetic and ethical attitude. So, you see, I must be at home here.

Lisbon is indeed a city for elegance. A city for the flâneur. But, as elsewhere, elegance is more and more absent from Lisbon.

Modern dandyism was invented in London. That says much about who we are. We are all Londoners. But I think Baudelaire was right pointing dandyism as the most ancient, and secret, institution. And I would say the dandy and the gentleman, as modern ideals, owe much to a knowledge of the classics…

And of course this is the best forum on the web. I wouldn't dream of being a member of anything else...

Style as defined as intrepidness? Portuguese have that in spades. While the rest of us were camping out, complaining either sea creatures or pirates would destroy our nascent navies, the Portuguese had established trading points across the globe.

Bem-Vindo.

Welcome NES:

I think you'll find the London Lounge not only informative, but very addictive as well. :D

The many different members of LL have put together insightful and interesting posts that have been like a series of threads that make up a pattern for a bespoke suit.

Enjoy yourself, and again welcome to the London Lounge.

Best Regards,

I know someone who said "nous tous des croque-morts"!

As for Kennedy, I think we might interpret him as meaning "we are all witnesses of the great tragedies of the last centuries, of modern states and their imperialist projects".

We, in that sense, are all Berliners, or Prussians and subjects of Frederick.

But dandyism, or elegance, is the other side of it. It is lightness in face of the heaviest.

I cannot tell you how glad I am every time a new member, like yourself, joins the LL and with the first few posts demonstrates that, wherever and whenever anyone reflects upon elegance, the conclusions are always the same. This proves, to me, that elegance EXISTS, that it is an objective fact of life. Hard though it may be to define, everyone recognizes it upon seeing it.

I'm sorry but I just noticed that my citation of Baudelaire above had a word missing. It shoul be:

"Nous sommes tous des croque-morts".

I'm also glad you are glad. It doesn't get more objective than that. Elegance is a very practical thing. It´s how we recognize each other. It is a touchstone.
