Here is a dress chart with the 1935 version of good dress rules and advice.

No T shirts, jeans or blouses unbuttoned to the navel. How this generation of men must have suffered wearing real clothes….

What do you think?

Cheers

Thanks for this very interesting post. Unfortunately, my myopia is growing worse everyday and I cannot read the text in the first image – the letters came out too small. Could you please quote the source of this dress chart? :D

Michael:

Very useful chart for young and old alike, the former to learn from and the latter to refresh what should not be forgotten. I'd like to see a poster of this chart made available to members, with the lounge logo mimicing a printed selvedge strip as a banner, on glossy stock, suitable for framing.

A lax attitude toward dressing, or a total disregard for one's appearance and hygiene, puts us one step closer to moving back into the caves. I'm reminded of a caustic comment made by Diana Vreeland, the doyenne of Vogue and the head of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She said: "Rundown heels on a man are the end of civilization!" That's it in a nutshell.
