Mixing Brown and Black

In Men in Style, the all too short collection of illustrations and captions from Esquire, I have noticed a few illustrations where it specifies mixing brown and black. For those following along at home, I'm thinking specifically of an illustraiton of two portly fellows, where one wears a predominantly brown outfit, including shoes, but a black knit tie (I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't give a page number. Sorry).

I was always under the impression that one wore either black or brown in one's outfit, but not both. Am I mistaken?

Do members have any guidance to mixing colors such as these? I'm not sure I've really expressed myself well in this post, but I hope I make sense.

This is mentioned in the coats article I think, while discussing this picture:

Here the man is travelling though, so the context is slightly unusual (unless you travel a lot), which could explain the mixing of town and country wear.
