Fashion(s), trends and customs are different. Frog in Suit recognizes this in another thread (coat cuffs). What differences do members see between them.? Maybe, fashion and fashions deserve separate treatment.

Fashion is the antithesis of style, which develops in bursts and/or gradually throughout the life of an individual. It's not about the herd mentality; it's about your own likes and dislikes, your own comfort zone. It's your signature!

Trends are merely marketing ploys, occasionally clever but usually relying on unsubstantiated data or bought-n-paid for advocates. Trends are invariably short-lived (Nehru jackets, anyone?) and leave you feeling bamboozled. Beware attempts to convince you that MTM is a match for bespoke, or that machine stitching is better than handstitching. Fashion magazines and newspapers are run by corporations. They thrive on advertising revenues, and 90% of the so-called editorial pieces you read are placed by publicists for big-name manufacturers. You're being had!

Customs are just timeworn traditions that somehow linger on from one generation to the next. Old habits, really, like comfy tapestry slippers in the cupboard of which the pampered pet is fond. While certain customs are honored, others need to be reassessed now and again for your--wait for it--unique sense of style!

I see custom as a generally settled practice - the former custom of wearing a hat, might be an example; fashion I see as the current general mode of hat that people wore and a trend might be some passing quirk in the fashion - trends and fashions (plural) being much the same. When Brummell is described on his commemorative plaque as 'Leader of Fashion' I think that it means that he led certain changes just about in custom - the move to sedate evening dress and.pantaloons, for example. Any thoughts?
