I am not very confident when it comes to mixing shoes i tend only to wear black shoes but if i am intending on expanding my wardrobe i feel i need to learn about what colour/style of shoe goes best with different types of suit. i suppose I'm thinking formal, business, day wear and maybe country wear thank you in advance.

Formal, black only. In town, black; in the country, brown permitted.
Such were the old conventions, oft referred to in the Lounge (together with many another bit of received wisdom and agreed-upon form) as "the rules". Today, almost anything goes: some men will wear dark-blue velvet slippers in place of black patent-leather pumps with their dinner coats; many will wear handsomely patinated brown calfskin oxfords with a navy business suit; etc., etc. And some, perhaps many, of these departures from the customs of old actually are both attractive and inoffensive -- at least, to me.

One has many options when starting a collection of shoes with the goal of sufficing in the situations you describe. Personally I found the post by Etutee which can be found
here tremendously helpful.

Another interesting resource is the old B&W John Lobb London catalogue:
