Can anyone define "tattersall" for me?

It's a check pattern named after horse traders in London. Typcially two different colours for the vertical and horizontals on a lighter background.

Its all to do with horses. Tattersalls was a horsemarket and the large check now referred to was similar to the horse blankets used there. I think..

Tattersall's is in fact the second oldest Thoroughbred auction company based in Newmarket. They have been having sales there and in Ireland since the 1800's, and is it correct that the check has to do with blankets one puts on horses during a winter sale, prior to their walking in the ring.
