The London Lounge

On a recent visit to Paris I noticed several reasonably well dressed gentlemen wearing suit jackets with a thick red thread looped from the button hole to the edge of the lapel.
Is this representitive of a brand? A political statement?

Just a guess but probably some class of the Legion d'honneur or Ordre Nationale de Merite.
