Suit/Sock matching

Gentlemen,

I am relatively new to the fashion game and was wondering, what's your take on matching (or not) socks with a suit?

My father always told me to try my best and match the colors (pant color = sock color), GQ says to go a shade darker than pant but lighter than shoe, and my own taste is to use socks as eye-candy.

Is it a faux pas to wear crazy-colored socks (like red with grey suit)?

If you work in a conservative environment then your father has given you some good advice for matching socks with a suit. If you dress more casually, then free up your imagination and experiment. After the shirt/tie, and pocket square, the sock is a great way to introduce color and interest to your dress. If you read elsewhere on the LL you will find more detailed sets of ideas on this subject. If you are still curious, then write again.

There is a whole thread running currently on not matching trousers and socks: http://thelondonlounge.net/gl/forum/vie ... php?t=6073. :D

A sound advice I heard often (and to which I subscribe) is that it is good for socks to "pick" a colour from an element of the rest of the outfit.
