Santa Maria Novella toothpaste

I was going to pose this as a general question in the 'anonymous' forum, when I saw that Santa Maria Novella had generated it's own thread in this, the Gent's Chambers section.
My question: I was given a tube of the SMN toothpaste as a gift and the paste is, well, um ... brown. Is this to be expected? It smells OK (spearminty) and the taste is not altogether displeasing. Perhaps the brown colour is due to the content of bloodroot (whatever that is), cinnamon and clove? I don't know how old the tube is and, as far as I know, one can't buy SMN products in my home city so I cannot simply pop in and compare it with a "fresh" product.
