NYC -Recommend alternative to db near 44th on Sun May 28?

My SO and I will be coming up for a matinee of Alan Bennett's History Boys the day before Memorial Day. It's at the Broadhurst (235 W. 44th) and we had planned to stroll up 44th after the show to have a ritual cocktail in the Algonquin lobby and then dine next door at db, which we have always enjoyed for that sort of occasion. But when I called just now to book a table, they said with some regret that they'd be closed that Sunday.
What would our New York members suggest to restore balance to this decapitated agenda? We'd prefer something in reasonable striking distance (a pleasant walk or short cab, but not completely across town); a place that's not so hot we couldn't still get a booking; obviously a place with notable food, but not so demanding that we'd feel we had to devote our entire attention to the meal rather than comparing notes about the play while we appreciated it.
What say you? This will be the day before Memorial Day. The Algonquin stop is quite expendable, if another combination suggests itself.
Thanks in advance . . .
