I want a v-neck or zip-neck sweater that is heavy-weight: I have looked at Barbour, Black Sheep (chez British Sporting Arms) and Purdey. Anyone have additional tips?

A somewhat belated reply but have you investigated William Evans? They are a reliable source of heavy-weight jumpers. If I recall correctly they stock some rather robust yak-wool jumpers.
