I just finished reading Ian Kelly's marvellous biography of Beau Brummell and it made me wonder about present day partaking of snuff.

I noticed that a local tobacconist actually stocks Friberg and Treyer snuff which was the preferred snuff of 'The Beau'.

Does anybody use snuff at all these days?

I've tried snuff several times and have an uncle that uses it as his preferred form of tobacco.

Ian Kelly's book is rather good, isn't it? I shall be interested to see how he plays Brummell when the film emerges. Brummell's later years, in French exile, are handled very well and Kelly did well to unearth some genuinely new information.

Fribourg & Treyer disappeared years ago, bought by Imperial Tobacco. I believe that they sold the brand-name to Wilsons of Sharrow.

To be honest, I was extremely surprised at how good the BB book was. I enjoyed reading Mr Foulkes biography of Count Alfred d'Orsay and didn't think that anything could surpass that one for 'Dandy' interest. I had previously read George Walden's Who is a Dandy?, which included d'Aurevilly's 'On Dandyism and George Brummell' and found it to be quite lacking in the interest stakes.

After finishing Ian Kelly's book, I felt quite a fondness for 'The Beau', hence my interest in snuff.
