Are overcoats made just like a suit jacket? With the same kind of canvas, and so on?
What are the differences in construction?

Yes, they are made the same. Sometimes a heavier canvas might be put through, definitely a sturdier lining, but othewrwise the construction is the same. Look at as a big jacket!!!

Dear Mr. Logsdail:
I have never really noticed but do some overcoats have working cuff buttons on them? They may not be a necessity, but I do enjoy having them on my suits and was wondering if you have ever put them on an overcaot or have seen any overcoats with them.

Best Regards,

I have seen covert coats and chesterfields (made from relatively thin cloth for overcoatings) that have functioning sleeve buttons. I imagine that most of the thicker stuff is just to thick to take a small buttonhole like that.

Poole has put working buttonholes as a matter of course on a coat made from heavyweight regimental cloth (the closest I got to proper melton, what is called melton today is no more than an abomination of its true 19th Century self).

I guess it's not necessary to have working buttonholes on anything. But I out them on everything, including overcoats.
