I was looking at the websites of various purveyors of Panama hats yesterday evening. It seems rather fiercely competitive, with many implying their competitors are cheats and charlatans. Some of the prices are simply astronomical--about what I would expect to pay for a new car!
Are there any wearers of Panama hats who could give me some guidance? Who are some of the more reputable purveyors of Panama hats? What should I look for in a Panama hat? At what price point could I expect "decent" (if not absolutely top-notch) quality...sort of the equivalent of Allen-Edmonds shoes among Panama hats? Any assistance would be valued.

I believe you have my phone number (from our e-mail correspondence). Please give me a call and I will try to help you.
I have a Montecristo Superfino from James Lock. While it was rather dear, it was nowhere near some of the astronomical prices quoted elsewhere. They have a website. And a visit to the shop in St James's Street is always a treat.

In my humble opinion, the Panama is a tricky creature. A good one, worn well, looks stunning. But if the quality is just the wrong side of acceptable, they look almost costumey or affected, rather than elegant.
I myself shall wait certainly until I'm older...
