I’ve just been to the Northampton shoe museum a couple of weeks ago and it’s well worth a visit. I was most impressed by some “repaired shoes”, competition entries from the 1920s/30s, where they used hundred and hundreds of nails in various colours to make the most elaborate patterns and designs on the bottom of the soles. (Don’t know if there were any complaints about slipping.)

There was also an X-ray machine to check the fit of kiddie’s shoes (They were phased out in the late 50s when they realised that exposure to X-rays wasn’t beneficial). I have vague memories of those machines, where you put in your feet, wearing the new shoes, and your mum and the sales-lady look into the machine and the sales-lady pronounces triumphantly: “He’s got plenty of room, Madam!”
