A friend has come into some vicuna, and he wants to make a single breasted overcoat.

My friend is new to bespoke clothing, and he would like some guidance.

Could our members post some pictures showing models single breasted overcoats worn by the greats of the past as well as regular people populating the internet.? It would be helpful.

Thank you.

I don’t know how to post photos but google Robert Shaw ( Doyle Lonergan ) in “The Sting”. Also Paul Newman in “Easy Money”. They are DBs but a great lesson in top coats.

A single-breasted coat is so easy to picture, not sure why you need live-action shots.
A Brooks Brothers catalogue could get you 90% of the way there, if they haven't ruined the collection and gone completely pseudo-Italian.

I've always been partial to the one Anthony Andrews wore as Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited. It must have been intended to be either vicuña or camel hair. It had a great line and a wonderful sweep. Unfortunately the only images I can find online (below) don't show it at its best, but give an idea. It recurs throughout the series as Sebastian progresses from undergraduate fop to adult derelict, like the threadbare remnant of civilization.

(It's the one on the left in the middle image below.)

A box overcoat is a classic. Also called a Vermont Chester. It has the lines of a Raglan but with a split sleeve.
