Button size and spacing for fewer than 4 button cuff?

Hello everyone

This is my first post on the forum and up until now have just been enjoying the etutee posts and scans.

I have a quick question. What size buttons would you use if you were having a 1, 2 or 3 button cuff on a sports coat and how would you space them? I'm specifically referring to tweed coats.

For the last sports coats, I just went for one cuff button, same size as the other buttons.

For 2 I'd space 3/4"
For 3 you could do 5/8"
But that's just what I might do.

The traditional preppy 2-button cuff has them spaced as though there were a third button in between.

I tried to get that in my last blazer, only to find that the finisher did, in fact, cut three holes. After the bolt had run out so there was no more cloth to do replacement sleeves. As it happened, the sleeves were a little short, so they had to cut a 4th hole-- taking me back to where I would have normally started.

emde, alden, just to clarify -- do you advocate using the same buttons as for the jacket's front?

Any opinions on using a single small button?

I think I might go for 1 button in the same size on a jacket.

If I were to go for a two button would it be better to use cuff sized buttons or the same as the closing?

@andreyb: yes one button of the same size as the other buttons
