Ercoles does good work, but he's in Manhattan only once or twice a week.

Ban Custom Tailor, First Avenue between 80th & 81st Streets (212-750-0444). I recommend him.
If you are in Midtown, there are Bhambi's and L & S Custom Tailors. I have not used them, therefore, I have no personal experience. Bhambi does alterations for stores without tailors on staff. L & S is a custom tailor across from Bloomingdale's.

Paul Winston (son of Chipp founder Harry Winston) shares space with an alterations tailor in the lobby of the building at 28 W 44th St. I'm not sure if he's still making clothes, but in the past Paul used to have the alterations tailor do some of the work that his own tailor couldn't get to. I haven't used this alterations tailor personally, but they were always busy when I was there, so I assume they must be okay. Interestingly enough, almost every woman who came in would ask about the cost and then complain that it was too expensive. Men usually didn't bother to ask.

+1 to this.
Paul's father was Sidney Winston and not the jeweler!

Sorry, you're right. For some reason the name Harry popped into my head. It didn't sound right, but I was too lazy to look it up. One of the problems of old age!
