I'm looking for a Donegal overcoating that weighs at least 600 grams / 20 oz. in a mid-to-dark brown wide herringbone.

Any good sources, apart from Molloy?

Kevin and Howlin sometimes have 700 g/m2 handloomed Donegal.

Thanks for the note, Simon. K&H are great, and I have reached out to them already.

Magee wouldn't sell overcoating to me before, Kevin and Howlin have handwoven overcoatings available for a brief period in October before it is made into their RTW. Studio Donegal also have handwoven in a double-width and indeed provided the cloth for Benedict Cumberbatch's overcoat in Sherlock.

Molloy has great overcoatings in 700/800 gms. The LL version is outstanding

Thanks - I had never heard of Studio Donegal - will give them a look.

Their website shows no cloth that I can see, and K&H's website is coming up completely empty.

On K&H, you simply have to drop them an email and they'll happily shoot out however many swatches you want. Very fairly priced as well.

I’ve got an RTW K&H Donegal overcoat & I like it. I’ve also got a length of their ‘overcoat-weight’ Donegal cloth ready for some future project.

Judging from the coat, the cloth & the various samples I have to hand I’d say that the overcoat cloth used by K&H is a chunky & relatively loose weave. It’s very different from the denser Donegal cloth woven by Molloy for example.

The K&H cloth is full of character & very rustic. In the long term I’d expect it to show wear more readily than the LL / Molloy cloth though. That’s not to say it’s inferior – just different in weave & character, which brings its own pros & cons.

K&H are very nice to deal with by the way.

Regards
Russell

Dear Badden and cathach,
Magee of Donegal has put up a website (http://www.Magee1866.com) in which -among many things- they sell Donegal tweed by the meter. They carry a beautiful earthy brown wide herringbone. I couldn´t find information regarding the weight, though.
