Dear Gentlemen,

Please advise me about the sweater and tie combination. I have seen from the 1940's and 50's actors like Mr. Gene Kelly and Mr. Donald O'Connor wearing this combination. Plus you see Mr. James Stewart wear the suit, sweater, and then the tie.
Is one fully dress and the other just a casual way (just sweater & tie) of wearing the combination.

Thanks, Justin

CG , if it's practical for you, wear it. I wear light cashmere or other sweaters with a tweed suit or even with a business suit and a tie and I get my scooter to work when it's not too cold . Try for the tie to be a knitted silk or a woolen / cashmere one , I just think it looks better that way. Have fun playing around with the colours combination and remember that the role of the tie as a component to the whole changes when it's underneath a sweeter, as the main colour compliment underneath your suit coat or sport coat is now the sweater . You don't always get it "right" I guess , use your intuition and always keep it a v neck .

...and preferably a deep V neck, which is not easy to find on the market. (Now LL sweater project comes to mind...)

Justin, if you still have any doubts.....

Please notice that -on purpose- I didn't post the other infamous photograph of l'Avvocato wearing his tie on the outside of his sweater.

By the way, very good advice by Vassilis in his post above.

I don't really like the v neck sweater and tie combination, but to each his own. I prefer the crew neck sweater which does not require a tie. Sometimes I wear them with a day cravat, although my girlfriend thinks it affected.

Might I suggest you try to explain to the GF the difference between originality, non-conformism and affectation?

Gentlemen, can cashmere sweaters be heavier in thickness. Also can they be worn for all casual occasions.
