Ralph Lauren's own dinner jacket

Mr. Lauren dresses always very strikingly but I am not particularly fond of his iconic DB 6x1 dinner jacket. The tapered waist seems at odds with the very low buttoning of the jacket. It makes it bulk out at mid-front and it leads to an unstable curving of the lapel. May be that´s exactly the nonchalant look that Mr. Lauren wants.

Ralph Lauren is, IMO, a stylish man who would look even more so if he were a bit more conservative. The 6x1 dinner jacket would be better if it were 6x2 and better still if it were SB with slightly smaller peak lapels. He is a man of slight build and clothes that even hint at high fashion, even though that is his hallmark, call attention to this. The Duke of Windsor was similar in stature and we are still lauding his style. I cannot think that he would have worn a turtleneck with a dinner jacket, even today.

A man who tries very hard will often be successful in most undertakings other than style. Ralph tries so very hard. He is a great businessman and has a nice smile.

Sometimes you do catch Windsor trying hard, when he is on an off look. He tried too. But he showed the effort less.

The men who have style so engrained into them that it appears always effortless are the most captivating.
