You may find the first iteration of White Tie was a military uniform; the brass buttons are suggestive of that.

That was my first thought, but I don't see any gold about the coat. Just a hint of affiliation with the waistcoat, then?

Then does that mean if I use gold button studs on my waistcoat it makes it military uniform? I cannot see anything else intergrated into the bodycoat and trousers to suggest it is mess dress in the form of gold buttons and lace and/or coloured facings, etc.
