Ah ha.. Costi is right.
[quote.in order to find Style since style does come from "being" your life.][/quote]
..and Knowing / accepting your real self .My tailor sometimes talks about some of the people he served in the past , people who wanted to decorate them selves ..who wanted to buy style in order to look good.
He use to say " they come here Vassili after having seen a figurine on some magazine and they ask me to make them look like that " .." but they are at least 50kg more then the figurine about 15cm shorter and still can't let go of the close to the body narrow waist figurine coat they've seen in the magazine " .I tell them " in all honesty Sir I don't think a narrow waist coat is a good idea for you .."
Still they do not get it , because those people come to me with the expectation to make them someone else ... !!

I hope you don't mind me quoting you but I thought I'd share a bit of old tailoring anecdote with ye here from Ireland. In my parents time suits were often seen with the breast pocket on the right-hand-side of the jacket, why you might ask? It was quite common for suits to be 'turned' when the cloth got too shiny or was otherwise no longer up to snuff. So it would be entirely re-made inside-out to get further wear from it. A cloth that you could batter and beat for 20 years then turn inside out and wear for another 20 must have been really something!!old henry wrote:Look at the sleeves. Armholes up up . Cloth today would not wear long enoulgh for a suit to take on that much character.
Cathach, You made my day. Yes Yes that is true. Suits would be reversed and worn on the otherside for another 20 years. And Irish , too ? Thank you. This was the old way of craft and life. Frank Shattuck.
I can do you one better Frank!! http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=51902 here's a video of my grandfather in his uniform, helping passengers onto a tender. What I notice is how well its fits, even as he moves in a wind and helps people down from the gangplank, there's no ripple or bunching in the jacket I can see.
After a certain period of time you would buy your uniform from the Gardaí, (as the police are called in Ireland), and he'd have it turned and used as a suit. You'd keep the buttons and have them used in your new uniform.

Back in the day when things were made to last like tools. Notice how high the armholes are on the uniforms. There in lies the functional ease of movement. .What a great piece of family history for you to have. Thank you for sharing it. Any photos ?
