The END is near ...

Maybe it is time for a pre-emptive protest, on the basis that we suspect what is going on. I do not, myself, feel that faceless bean-counters (a nice phrase St Tully), deserve to be treated with more than cool civility and subjected to probing questions. There has been no reply to my e-mail and I expect that what is nearly a national treasure will soon be shredded.

I'm afraid the end is certainly near for Malcolm Plews of Welsh & Jefferies; not for him personally I am glad to say but for his work - he is retiring in September. His career has spanned 51 years. He is one of the true gents of his profession and a wonderful tailor. I will have to give some thought to my last commission but, gentlemen, if you want a coat cut by one of the greats of the row your time is limited. If Mr Alden is reading this, perhaps a feature on Malcolm might be worthwhile before he goes - I am sure his knowledge of the art, and of the row, is vast.

Why doesn't he become a consultant and keep his hand on the shears so to speak?

I have had a terrific, considered forty line response from Budd's PR manager, which demonstrates that my knee-jerk reaction of doom and gloom was uncalled for and that the culture and atmosphere of Budd is in safe hands. They will be closing for a short while for some necessary refurbishment. Overall, I feel like raising three cheers. :D

I'll ask whether she minds the whole being seen.

Since some of us know Poppy and the team as such, it was suggested that there was not to worry about....Budd is in good hands.

My first post here -- and a welcome to all the LL members!

Until now I've only passed by the shop -- once exchanged a few words with one of the gents working there. Seems like a piece of history one wouldn't want to lose. Anyway, I expect to try their RTW shirts come next week -- hope they won't be closed for refurbishment then.

Touché!

The present lack of convenient means of communication is exactly what prompted me to desert Budd and go to Mr Lachter.

Perhaps the most confidence-inspiring sentence in the whole message.

The end has come... :)
