The Covid crisis is having a dramatic effect on British and Italian fabrics mills. Shutdowns have affected business, And a few very important traditional markets for these mills have banned the import of goods for as much as one year as a response to the virus calamity. This loss of access to large markets is and will continue to put pressure on the fabrics industry for the foreseeable future. Many mills are closed, some are still running but at reduced staffing. The already hard hit British Textiles industry may see more failures if something is not done soon.

So I would encourage all of you, and all those in our community of fabrics and tailoring enthusiasts, to make a special effort to buy some cloth now from your chosen dealer, distributor or tailor. If you are planning a few additions to your business wardrobe for next year or the year after, purchase the fabrics for those projects now if you can possibly do so. Fabrics keep for decades, but businesses lost may never reopen.

The best way to help relieve the stress on small business is intervention from customers as well as governments. Together we can help buoy up an industry and see them through this terrible pandemic.
