Does anyone know of a cloth merchant in Montreal that sells quality cloth? I am looking to buy cloth semi-locally and would like to find a store like Tip Top in New York or Textile King in London.

ther are three that you should check out. The first is David Smith Woolens who also trades under the name Garriga. Great Englsh cloth from Bower & Roebuck and Woodhouse. The next is United Silk & Woolens. The taste in cloth and styling is more Italian than English. His major line is Barbaris which is a great cloth value. The last is Douglas and I don't know much about them. There are however no Tip Top deals to be had in Montreal.

Dougdale (if "Douglas" is a typo, since I have never heard of them) makes great old fashioned worsted. Not up to Lesser quality, but it's very good. They specialize in the heavier weights. I think the lightest thing they make is 12 ounces.

Are these like, physical stores in Montreal that I can go into and buy cloth? 'Cause that is what I am looking for. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Dugdale is a Huddersfield merchant, Douglas is a Montreal based merchant. Their main line I beleive is Scabal or one of the ther large merchant houses. These are not stores and for the most part are set up to sell to the trade. As Terry so elloquently stated in another thread they may well do business with you but keep in mind they are not in the retail business and in general would rather not deal with some of the headaches associated with that trade.

ibucephalus:
The are a number of textile merchants on Rue St Hubert (near Jean Talon) in Montreal.
There is a vast difference in the textile qualities but there were (as of 2 years ago) at
least two shops which supplied hight quality suiting woolens.
I don't recall seeing English fabric specifically.
As an amateur (student) tailor, I've enjoyed several shopping expeditions there.
Best of luck. Let us know if you find anything that meets your needs

Good evening ibucephalus,

I stopped by Douglas Woollens today.
They are clearly not set up for walk in business, but they were very kind and helpful and offered advice freely.

While I did not find the exact fabric I am seeking, I did purchase a few yards for a jacket I will have made after the holidays.

Interestingly, they do not state what mills make the fabrics, all the fabrics I saw were labeled, "woven for Douglas Woollens" or something to that affair.

If you stop in at Garriga or United Silk & Woolens please let me know how you were received. I hope to visit both before the holidays.

In my oppinion Garriga ( david smoith woolens ) is the top merchant in montreal. It is almost exclusivly english cloth. i prefer their taste level to United Silk & woolens.
