The above houndstooth example from the Merchant Fox site is a suiting. The garment, in fact, is described as a suit by Fox. I don't think one would be happy with that example as a sportcoat. I would not wear it as such.

Fox proposes this classic design as a Houndstooth jacketing (very similar to Windsor's jacket):

You are right the Jacketing is a much better choice for a sports coat.

Exactly right. I have the jacketing in the H. Lesser 16 ozs Golden Bale quality from long ago. And I have the smaller design houndstooth suiting, also from H Lesser in Golden Bale 16 ozs, made into a 2 pc suit.

Here's my update on this post (I know you've all been waiting with bated breath):

I followed your wise counsel, took a deep breath, and went ahead and commissioned the jacket in a larger black and white houndstooth pattern, to make sure it read as a sportcoat and not an orphaned suit jacket. I'm glad I took the plunge.

I plan to wear it with dark grey flannel trousers, but would appreciate your guidance on shirt and tie options. Oh gurus of London Lounge, what do you suggest, to keep with a vibe that's more "classic" and less "inveterate tout hanging out at a racetrack"?
