Fellows loungers,

Do any-one know where to find genuine tattersall cloths in New York? Any W.Bill cloth dealers in the city? I will be in town in february and plan to acquire a flannel tattersal cloth to later bespeak a waistcoat (it would be made by my taylor in Rio).

Thanks,
LG

I haven't seen this for years - especially not here in NYC. Hunt & Winterbotham and H.E. Box used to run them, but the demand fell! Your best bet might be to contact these companies directly in the UK to see if they have some old stock hanging around. You might be lucky. you might also try old tailoring firms in London like Myer & Mortimer. They have stock collecting dust going back for years.

you never know!

H.E. Box still do tattersall checks! They have three or four different ones in a 14oz I think.

Good to know about H E Box.

A couple of other possible sources (not in NYC, I fear) might be Bookster, which sells at least one tattersall check (500g) intended specifically for waistcoats (a black and red check on cream). You can order it here (scroll down past the Porter & Harding thornproofs). And this page shows part of a made-up waistcoat in the cloth so you can see the scale of the check. You can contact them via email or phone to inquire if other colors are available).

And you might also try contacting David Saxby in London not far from Putney Bridge. He has for years made RTW and MTM waistcoats, mostly in silk, but I've also seen plain doeskin flannels and tattersalls there in past years. He can probably refer you if he doesn't have any bolts in stock or sell cut lengths. His web site appears to be out of date; I believe the current contact info is +44 (0) 20 7610 6558 at 60-62 Fulham High Street, London SW6 3LQ. This video from last spring shows him in the shop and some detailing on his waistcoats.

Cudworth of Norden also sell RTW tattersall waistcoats. The owner's family has been in the cloth business for generations, and they may be able to suggest cloth sources as well (contact info on the linked page). They show three different tattersall colors.

Good luck!

I was in W Bill's new premises today in London and happened to see at least three tattersalls. You might contact them.

When I looked several months ago, W. Bill had an entire book of tattersalls.

W. Bill have (or had in the last few years) a dozen or more tattersall patterns in 14oz weight.
