We of the LL need to try to bring the clock sock back to the fore even if we have to resort to bespoke to secure it. IMHO, this is the one pattern that no sock maker can afford not to make and that every man should have. It should not be more expensive than any other woven pattern to make. It is classic and old world yet equally stylish for the modern man. It sets off the ankle, a good feature for practically anyone, to advantage. It is so subtle that even the most timid dresser would try it, yet so stylish that no dandy can resist. Most of all it goes well with every pattern of trouser and every mode of dress from formal to casual. If a man should have 24 to 36 pairs of socks as NJS holds, every one could reasonably of this pattern.

I associate them with coloured swirls above the ankle. Disraeli wore a pair when he was laughed down in his HofC maiden speech!

Bresciani told me some time ago that the technique to make clocks by machine was lost for about fifty years. It has reappeared in their line recently and I am currently offering half a dozen basic colorways on my store. I am sure other Bresciani resellers will also have them.

Will, I have read this also and while it may well be true it does not seem like a valid reason to halt production of an item that is so modern, versatile and stylish. After all woven designs on socks is a small thing compared to the modern accomplishments of man. Thanks for doing your part to keep this pattern alive. The rest of us now should step up and do ours.

You have failed to tell us why we should exhibit our ankles - your first post refers. Or was that an excess of exuberance?

DFR, Exurberance? Yes. Excess? Perhaps. However, I trust that you are asking for an explanation as to why this item is pleasing and I doubt that this is possible for me to give. St. Augustine held that no object could give account of its own beauty, i.e. Brad Pitt can rightly claim that he is better looking than I, but not why he is so. As Montesquieu said, and recently quoted by NJS of the LL, " Taste is and I do not know what".
